This literacy class was designed to help parents learn practical ways to support their children’s reading and writing development at home. Speech-language pathologist, Mikayla Plemmons teamed up with homeschool grad and mom from Illuminate Communicate Speech Therapy, to answer questions about reading. Mikayla began by explaining literacy and its concepts, how early literacy skills develop, including phonological awareness, letter-sound connections, and vocabulary growth. Parents learned strategies for helping their children recognize and play with sounds in words, such as rhyming activities and segmenting sounds in simple words.
The class also covered screening options that parents can use to determine their child's strengths and weaknesses in literacy, curriculum suggestions, and practical tips and strategies for implementation today!
The session closed with a Q&A with questions in real time or previously submitted by parents of struggling readers.
Here are some questions submitted and answered:
Am I the problem?
Is there something else going on? What is the issue?
How can I help my child read?
What needs to happen IN my child for them to read?
How do I retrain their brain?
Explain what my child is thinking or seeing so I can empathize with them?
Is there a style, method, or curriculum that works?
